This week’s collection includes multiple doubles. It’s an exciting time for R&B music, and we’re pleased to be to sitting right here in the front row, watching it evolve right before our eyes.Of course, you can hear that growth for yourself below. We’re proud to see how the field has expanded to include various different soundscapes, increasingly pushing the genre to new limits. What started off as a fairly modest effort, has now grown substantially to the monstrosity you see here (and we mean “monstrosity” in the most loving way possible). We embarked on this journey exactly 5 months ago with the goal of finding only the best tunes the internet had to offer. Hello ninjas, and welcome to Sunday Night Soul Volume 20. Of course there’s plenty of other gems hidden below, but you’ll need to sift through to find them for yourself.
Those include selections from Tin Gardens, D.R.A.M., Submotion Orchestra, Iman Europe, Tiara Thomas, Raleigh Ritchie, Betty Who, Bayou, Telescope Thieves, Joey Solo, XONA, WLYN, Falcons, Lido, Maryann, JENI, CompSci, woodini and Kwabs. We can’t safely say we’ve covered everything here, but we’re fairly certain we’ve found the best of the best. Although we expected a bit of a slowdown in output this week with the advent of festival season, we instead were surprised to stumble upon an overwhelming amount of material while assembling this magnificent playlist. While FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out for those who don’t know) is inevitable while our eyes our glued to the live stream on YouTube, we’ve managed to keep ourselves relatively busy by scouring the net for the most serenely sublime tracks we could find. While most of the ninja team spent the weekend melting away under the desert sun at Coachella, the rest of us here at TMN have been hard at work to ensure that you have the latest and greatest tunes the internet has to offer. Check out the single above, and make sure to grab a copy of Souled Out when it hits shelves in September. I caught myself zoning out more than a couple times in the middle of this write-up, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself getting lost in this one, of course followed by you scrambling to hit the replay button once it’s finished. As always, the writing is completely on point, striking a cool balance of meaningful, candid and relatable lyrics, with the highlight being, “Have you seen my fucks to give? I have none, I cannot live with the pressure.” Premiered earlier today on Vogue, Jhene’s latest single serves as a stress reliever of sorts, as she vents about some of the issues currently ailing her the best way she knows how–through gorgeous melodies constructed with her confectionery sweet vocals and breezy Fisticuffs production. Now, as she gears up for the release of her debut album, Souled Out, it’s time to find out if the 26 year old songstress is ready to handle “The Pressure” associated with her newfound stardom. After a breakout year in which she toured the world with Drake, found herself featured on seemingly every top rap album, and culminated with the release of her remarkable Sail Out EP, it seems as if Jhené Aiko is primed to make even bigger moves in 2014.
